  Background:

RI Land Trust Council is a coalition of land trusts across the state. (www.rilandtrusts.org)

Land Trusts are non-profit organizations formed by citizens and towns to protect land – the special places that the community treasures and wants to keep from being developed. Land Trust priorities for protecting land vary based on the board members and their interests and based on what land is most valued in their community. Examples of priorities are: scenic views, working farms, watershed protection, important habitat for rare species, shorelines and to provide public access to rivers and the bay, etc. There are over 45 land trusts in Rhode Island and most are entirely volunteer organizations.

Land Trust Days is an initiative of the Rhode Island Land Trust Council.
During the 6 weeks from August 10 – September 30 - many land trusts across the state are organizing activities for the community. Land trusts are inviting the public to come see the special places that are protected “just outside their door.” Some land trusts are organizing guided trail walks, others are holding festivals. The purpose of Land Trust Days is to increase the visibility of land trusts and the special places they are protecting. ie. We want more Rhode Island residents and visitors to know about land trusts and the special places that are protected in their communities. And we want to encourage more people to have fun enjoying these protected lands.

Specs: We're looking for 2 pieces a rack card (4 x 9 inches), postcard (4 x 5.5 inches). The rack cards need to stand out in displays such as visitor centers, the post cards need to grab your attention at coffee shops counters, doctor’s offices, barber shops and beauty salons etc.; the business cards should grab your eye at counters in coffee shops, restaurants, banks etc. We’d like the design to be re-enforcing for all three pieces.

Activities from August 10 to September 30.

There’s something for everyone: guided trail walks, canoe and kayak paddling, star-gazing, naturalist talks, geocaching, family festivals and more.

Check out the activities! Go to one in your community or plan to explore by attending a series of activities around the state.

It's worth noting that the overall slogan will work best if it's reinforced with an image that evokes thoughts of the scenic views, green spaces, working farms that make up the land trusts.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DESIGNER
Audience: People likely to appreciate the trails, scenic landscapes and waterways and working farms that make up the state's land trusts.
We think those people are new residents, young adults just out of college, newly-retired, and people who buy local foods.

Most of these people won't know what land trusts are, or that there is a land trust so close to their home.

We want them to see our message and consider attending the event that's being held at the land trust that's closest to their home.

Specs: We're looking for 2 pieces a rack card (4 x 9 inches), postcard (4 x 5.5 inches). The rack cards need to stand out in displays such as visitor centers, the post cards need to grab your attention at coffee shops counters, doctor’s offices, barber shops and beauty salons etc. We’d like the design to be re-enforcing for both pieces.

Concept for Rack Card and Post Card: We'd like to have the slogan on the front with the land trusts logo. We have two ideas about the kind of the image and we'd welcome other ideas.

1) An image that shows people what they can expect to find at a land trust (trails, woods, waterways, working farms, or a scenic view).

2) An image of a person or a door or a person and a door. We could be looking in at the person who has a surprised and happy look at what they're seeing. Or we could be looking from behind the person and see what they're seeing when they look outside their door.

On the back we'd like the tagline and then a space where each local land trust can put a label that has the specific time and place of their event. (Mailing label 1”x4” that can be printed separately and added to the card – not with an address but with details about the local activity for example:
Join South Kingstown Land Trust for a
Guided Walk, Saturday, August 11 10:00 AM
Family Festival, Sunday, Sept. xx 10 AM - 4 PM
(Obviously there is no need for a label space for the business card.)
