I'd like to stay away from the web 2.0 look with the glossy overlay. I am ok with using gradients.
Maxieboy, I am interested in seeing what you can some up with for other flame ideas. I like more a more stylized flame, like my original, than I do in your draft #1-6
odc69, I like draft #17 because the overall shape is square rather than a long rectangle. However the designs are too dark/not enough contrast.

octopus, I like what you have been doing with the flame, although would prefer something less shiny. maybe even try a flat color?
