Dokum Mskoda Sedge Meadow Nature Preserve is 95 acres of high quality wetlands that include endangered and threatened plants species that are protected by the Federal government and the state government. Being an Illinois Nature Preserve affords this land the highest protection in the state of Illinois. In addition, this is the land where the Potawatomi roamed before 1833. Tallgrass prairie, sedge meadows, and oak savannas covered the area during their time here. It is the wish of the current landowners to honor the Potawatomi by dedicating this nature preserve to them. The logo should be respectful of the Native Americans as well are representative of the plants and animals that call Dokum Mskoda home. Dokum Mskoda is Potawatomi meaning "Quiet Prairie." The wetlands, tallgrass prairies, and oak savannas habitats are very rare and globally imperilled. The endangered plant species in the nature preserve are now only found in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. |
