Mareingenii, I don't think anyone said stock photos are copyrightable- but what I did mention earlier was that the use of stock photos, such as those found at the popular istockphoto.com can NOT be used in logo and trademark designs because the copyrights are NOT transferrable. Some websites and individual stock photos vary in the restrictions in their license agreements, so it's important for the designer to read them carefully, especially before you buy them or use up your credits on something that you can't use legally. Also, if the license is fully transferrable then you must inform the project holder of any additional cost for using those images.

    http://www.istockphoto.com/license_comparison.php

If the project holder gets sued for the illegal use of artwork in a design the consequences could land on you as the designer- it's a really big deal and it's fairly easy to find stock photos that have been illegally used- there's several on this project alone.

I can't agree more with rastasoulshine. I'm a newbie to mycroburst/ designguru, and I fully agree with him on the no-nos. I would also add to the list of no-nos: 1}Most logos I see here are created in RGB, which looks rich and great on monitor, but will be a different story when it finally comes on print 2) A logo is not just about a design, it's also about a brand and the associated emotions. In the brief there is no provision for client to add this bit of important detail. May be MB/ LG should seriously consider this.
Yeah, may be I've come to the wrong place, or like rastasoulshine said, "am completely wrong".

by the way thanks to rastasoulshine for his expert comments.

dear all, its good to be inspired from other designs but its just ugly to copy elements from others.
About using stock photos is also allowed accrding to the website rule but you have to convey the CH about the use of content and CH will be responsible to buy that from stock directory as per guidelines on this site.

    Regards

No offense to anyone, and I know it's your personal opinion, but I believe there are better quality submissions than the ones you listed. Most of these have a globe theme, and while some work better than others, I wouldn't necessarily say most were lacking theme; however, a couple of them are using stock vectors from sites such as istockphoto which, according to most license agreements, is illegal for logo and trademark work. It's nice to have sites like LDGuru for us designers to pick up extra work on the side, but the downfall is that most "designers" here submit amateurish (I just learned photoshop today) work and most don't know that they should: 1) be creating vector logos instead of pixel (illustrator vs photoshop) so that it is infinitely editable such as with scaling the size of the image, 2) use the Pantone Matching System for colors, and 3) refrain from using stock artwork from 3rd parties unless the license is 100% transferable and the client knows about the additional cost of such license.

Based on your favorites above, I already see stock globes and non-vector work, which in the industry is a no-no! Again, no offense, just my opinion.

Not a big fan of the ranking system. If a CH likes a design they should send a private message.

  • September 15, 2010 3:59 AM mannee

Note that even without ranking, designers "lift" from other designs

absolutly agree with you technoteaminc, good luck guys! \m/

I think CH wants a fare designing effort as ranking causes sometimes wrong inspiration and other designers steal elements from ranked designs.

No hard feeling as it is what I think.
