Rhythms & Muse novel and CD cover designs

"Make dreams come true" theme

NOVEL TITLE: Rhythms & Muse AUTHOR: Ann Narcisian Videan GENRE: women’s fiction LENGTH: 114,000-words THEME: making dreams come true Paranormal element: heroine’s dreams are guiding her (one actually comes true in real life, which makes her see she should listen to her intuitions) SETTING: Half of the story takes place in 1977–78 in Coeur d’Alene, ID, half in 2003 (mostly) in California CHARACTERS: (see list at end) SYNOPSIS: Witnessing a horrific car accident makes award-winning singer Alexandra Lauren reevaluate her empty Hollywood lifestyle. Spurred by recurring dreams and near-forgotten longings, she returns to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with the hopes of reconnecting with her old love and former singing partner Matt Roberts. But, he spurns her despite her efforts to reconcile. In the end, she discovers her true passion lies in sharing music and, in her attempt to win back Matt’s love, she is able to reconnect with the innocent enjoyment of music they once enjoyed together. She moves forward to teach and share music, finding true fulfillment — and through that, winds up gaining her lost love after all. COMPACT DISK (CD) COVER TITLE: Rhythms & Muse SINGER/SONGWRITER: Ann Narcisian Videan GENRE: folk and easy listening LENGTH: 5 original songs inspired by the novel RHYTHMS & MUSE CHARACTERS ALEXANDRA LAUREN (heroine) • Striking/curly light blonde hair/green eyes/slim/5’4” • Practical, almost controlling • Disbelieving of intuitions at first, but comes to believe them • Driven • Talented vocalist • Honest • Loyal • Witty • Smart • In love with Matt MATT ROBERTS (hero) • Handsome/honey brown hair/hazel eyes/slim/5’10” • Talented composer/pianist • Frustrated with home responsibilities forced on him by his parents • Dreamer • Home-body • Loner • Loves kids • Honest • Smart • In love with Alex, childhood friend of both Kathy and Daniel DANIEL POST • Gorgeous/blonde/blue eyes/athletic/6’1” • Conniving and manipulative • Resourceful • Jock/Athletic • Smart • Loves action • In love w/ Alex, great friends and eventual husband of Kathy KATHY SAMPSON POST • Pretty/brunette/brown eyes/lanky/5’7” • Follower at first, but comes into her own as a party planner as an adult • Loves catering and planning parties • Lost (in some ways), often looks for guidance • Smart • Loyal • Resourceful • In love with Matt for many years, marries Daniel, hates Alex until near end of story, former best friend of Suzanne SUZANNE BRIGGS THOMPKINS • Plain/brunette/brown eyes/plump/5’6” • Insightful • Wise • Generous • Friendly • Funny • Alex’s best friend, in love with Brett BRETT THOMPKINS • Cute/ginger-haired/hazel eyes/wiry/5’9” • Funny • Friendly • Dorky • From Texas • In love with Suzanne, friends with Alex

40-something+ women's fiction readers desiring to fulfill life dreams

NOVEL General design concepts to consider: • Prefer artist w/ book COVER DESIGN EXPERIENCE, as there are certain nuances which entice readers pick a book off a shelf • BOOK SIZE: Octavo, 9”X6” • A MUSIC BOX plays a key role in the story between the hero and heroine • The main image guiding the heroine in her dream is a SHAFT OF LIGHT shining on a lake cabin deck. • The CABIN also is a main theme. The structure overlooks the lake has one door, two porthole-shaped windows, a large deck, and a creek running under the deck. • CONCEPTS I LIKE: – Most of the image in black & white and punching it up w/ one main element in color, but I’m not tied to this idea. It appeals to me because it’s representative of the flashback element in the story. – An image reflected in someone’s eye – Half of a face – A shaft of light shining through a door or window to illuminate a key element (perhaps the music box) COMPACT DISK (CD) General design concepts to consider: • Must be adapted from book cover design • Music files will be MP3 format, but may also be printed on physical CD, so need image that will fit in a CD jewel box, or can be printed on CD sleeve. (4.724 inches square, or 4.974 inches square for "bleeds.")

Really don't like the font he's used on the cover, it's far too difficult to read, but it's not my decision at the end of the day.

Some observations: • I'm leaning toward more color rather than black & white... • I really like the treble clef sign replacing the ampersand. • Not too keen on the "laser beam" shaft of light. Would rather have a more ethereal, but still strong, "ray from heaven" kind of look • Like the softer, sans serif fonts used

All designers: "Making dreams come true" is a theme of the book, but not a tagline/subtitle. If you'd like to add a tagline, please use (including the quote marks): "Nothing you can touch, can show you what is really there." Thanks!

Draft #10 is approaching what I'm looking for. Love the idea of her goal being the shaft of light. A musical element is all that's missing. Music is such a key theme to the book (I'm selling with a CD), I really think it needs to be reflected on the cover and to tie in with the title. A couple of nitpicky items: - Looks like the girl is in a wedding dress, which doesn't fit the story at all - The heroine has blonde, curly hair - Not too thrilled with the red ampersand

Draft #11 is a clean, eye-catching layout, but doesn't capture the essence of the book. See other comments above, please.

I like the lightness and layout of Draft #8. Would like to see another element from the brief included to clue in the reader about key themes in the book: music, dreams, reaching the (shaft of) light, reaching goals.

Draft #4 and #5 are approaching what I want. I like the face, the cabin and deck, the type, and the layout. Not too keen on the line-drawn gramaphone. (The image in the story is a lacquered wooden music box with a rose on the lid.) My main concern, though, is the "mystery" feel to this design. The story is lighthearted, and needs a more happy feel to it. I'll rework my brief to better reflect this.

Draft #2 and Draft #3 are handsome and incorporate a couple of elements I like, but do not capture the spirit of my book. The heroine has curly hair...and the story is lighthearted, not brooding like these images. Please thoroughly read the detailed brief I provided.
