Creative Brief

Professional Learning Communities-Book Cover Design

The 4S Approach

I am writing my second book and need a design that illustrates my idea. The book is on Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), which in the educational realm, really means a culture of collaboration where teachers and administrators work closely with one another (doing whatever it takes) for the betterment of the students. The fresh idea that I have on PLCs is called "The 4S Approach". The design I am looking for illustrates this approach. I need a design with four quadrants (sort of like a coordinate plane). Quadrant I (upper-left) represents "Standpoint". This quadrant needs to somehow visually communicate diversity with members of the staff (NOT diversity with students). Each and every individual staff member has differing experiences, world views, opinions, and perspectives. Quadrant II (upper-right) represents "Struggle". This quadrant needs to somehow visually communicate the dynamics (behaviors, feelings, actions, inactions, and so forth) that stem from the diversity illustrated in Quadrant I. When all these experiences, world views, perspectives, etc. come together, it creates some sort of interpersonal dynamic, an inherent struggle at times. Quadrant III (lower-left) represents "Solidarity". This quadrant needs to somehow visually communicate the building of effective teams. I have attached two logos (color and black/white) that could be utilized (minus the words, e.g., WiseFoundations: Where Results Begin). Do not feel obligated to use them if you have other ideas. Quadrant IV (lower-right) represents "Structure". This quadrant needs to somehow visually communicate the systems, processes, and interventions that are used within a school to improve learning.

The target audience will be educational leaders.

1. I will need both color and black/white 2. I would like for the illustrations, symbols, etc. in each quadrant to somehow match one another in tone and style.

#5 is a nice start. What is intriguing is the yin-yang with Quadrants 1 and 2, as well with III and IV. Standpoints need to be recognized in struggle; solidarity needs to be evident in structures.

@CDanH: Now we are talking. Thanks for reading my brief thoroughly to get an understanding of the design I am looking for. Couple of requests: 1. Are you able to create a black/white (and gray) version? 2. I think Quadrant III needs to match the other three somehow. As you see, the "people" in each of the other quadrants have one dot. They have two dots in Quadrant III. Can you somehow have three bars with each of the individuals at the top of the three bars? I hope this makes sense. 3. Something small, Quadrants I and IV have sharp a sharp edge and Quadrants III and II have a more rounded edge. Can you match those either way? 4. Can you have "4S Approach" in the center. Maybe have it really jump out at you. Thanks for your work! Perry

GraphicsCreations, great start. I like the circle containing the 4S model. Please do not worry about the the "book cover look". I would like there to be abstract designs within each quadrant communicating each "S" idea. Lastly, I am not looking for a stock photo in the background. Thanks! Perry

3lysium79, I do NOT just want a picture copied and pasted into the quadrants. I would like it to be abstractly communicated. Thanks!

CDanH, I look forward to seeing your design. Whitedove, I uploaded a logo for a business I have. Please, if you use it, acknowledge style: simple, yet abstract.

Perry: You might consider restoring the "Solidarity" Quadrant logo uploads, just for inspiration & to give us an idea of a graphic-style you've liked or that left an impression with you. A current Project Holder (arts group in London) mentioned he liked the "Dance Umbrella UK", "Barbican", and "Lyric Theatre" logos, among others, and those styles were very revealing of what "look" he was after. If I tell a fellow designer that I like Saul Bass's work or Milton Glaser's PushPin Studios-era designs, they have a better "handle" on the style I mean to convey. Of course, you'll always get some Drafts that take your uploads "literally" or in copycat-mode, but it just might spark someone's Muse into vision & action. Hope this helps, --Dennis @ WhiteDove

Do you want the quadrants to be illustrated abstractly or would you prefer actual images/photographs in each section?

Designers, I am looking for an actual design of the 4S Approach, which includes the four quadrants, and the components of each quadrant that I offered in my brief. Thanks! Perry

Hello designers. We are looking for a book cover with this design. I have also pulled off the logo designs that I uploaded. They are not necessarily that important. I look forward to seeing some unique designs. Thanks! Perry
